El Peso Hero, launched in 2011 by Dallas-based educator and artist Héctor Rodríguez III, follows Ignacio Rivera, a reluctant Mexican American superhero endowed with super strength and unbreakable skin. The hero defends the disenfranchised along the U.S.-Mexico border, standing up against injustice and supporting vulnerable communities. The series blends high-stakes action with commentary on immigration, equity, and multiculturalism. Bilingual by design, with the hero speaking only Spanish, it reflects the Spanglish rhythms of border life, drawing on Rodríguez’s upbringing in Eagle Pass, Texas, and his family’s legacy.
This exhibition transforms the narrative into a multisensory gallery experience, showcasing how comics serve as a vehicle for Latino representation and storytelling.
