]]>On April 11, 1921, 100 Years ago, the Majestic Theatre first opened its doors as one of many vaudeville theaters of “Theatre Row,” Dallas’ historic entertainment center on Elm Street.
As the last standing theater of “Theatre Row”, the Majestic has hosted many figures such as Ginger Rogers, Mae West, Harry Houdini, Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Jack Benny, Bob Hope and more. To this day, the Majestic continues to host concerts and movie nights.
The Renaissance Revival-style building was designed by architect John Eberson. Eberson was nationally known for his “atmospheric theaters,” including the Majestic, which often featured ceiling “skies” of mechanically controlled floating clouds and twinkling stars.
The Majestic Theatre was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. It stands today as a reminder of the city’s architectural, social, and cultural heritage.
Calling all Dallas-based visual artists, the City of Dallas Office of Arts and Culture (OAC) requests the submission of your qualifications to design a commercial-style movie poster for the Dallas Majestic Theatre Centennial and celebration.
After submissions in response to the request for qualifications, a panel comprised of arts professionals, community representatives, and OAC staff will review qualified submissions of Requests for Qualifications in May 2021.
Up to 4 artists will be asked to prepare their conceptual design proposal comprised of drawings, paintings, or digital renderings of the Majestic Theatre Centennial Poster. The artists selected for conceptual designs will be awarded $250 each. From the conceptual designs, one (1) artist will be awarded an additional $1,500 to complete the final design of the poster based on their conceptual design.

The City of Dallas Office of Arts and Culture’s Community Arts Division is requesting proposals from Non-Profit Organizations with ALAANA-focused programming for an 8-week residency!
The residency can be in-person or virtual, focusing on providing services in Districts 2-6, 8, and 10-13. These Districts do not have neighborhood cultural centers to connect arts organizations with new communities.

Using any arts discipline, the proposed residency projects must address art and culture and create access to artistic and cultural programming for the residents of Dallas.

]]>The City of Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs is now accepting applications from artists, arts educators, and designers for a second round of micro-residencies in City departments.
The goal of the residencies is for creative thinkers/artists to embed themselves in non-arts-focused City departments and offer creative innovations and solutions to improve their operations and processes. The residencies are not intended to create art FOR the Departments, but rather to bring different artistic perspectives or changes TO existing operations – to show that artistic and creative thinking is part of everything we do and that creative thinkers are valuable team members. The first round of residencies occurred in 2018 as part of the Dallas Cultural Plan. Reports and recommendations from those residencies can be found on pp. 33-37 of the Dallas Cultural Plan.
This round of residencies will be up to two weeks in duration and will offer a stipend of up to $2,000.
Applications are due by February 25, 2019. After review by a panel of City staff, Dallas Cultural Plan partners, and previous micro-residency participants, up to 10 finalists will be selected. A “meet and greet” interview meeting will allow City departments to meet and learn about the applicants and give feedback on their proposals, as well as for the applicants to learn more about the City Departments. After the “meet and greet”, applicants will submit present revised proposals, based on which the selection team will pick up to 5 artists, arts educators and/or designers for the residencies.
Selected artists will be notified by March 15th and publicly announced at the Dallas Arts Month Press Preview on Wednesday, March 27, 2019. 2018.
The Residency
The residencies can begin as early as April 1 and must be completed by May 31. A report-out event will be scheduled for early June. Each artist will be paired with a City department and will work to create a plan and schedule for approximately 80 hours on site. Residents will be provided with a desk or works space (as needed) within a specific City department in which they will complete the residency and will be paid a stipend of up to $2000.
